Philip Catherine Trio • Transparence

Biography by Matt Collar

An immensely gifted Belgian guitarist, Philip Catherine is a highly regarded performer known for his harmonically nuanced, deeply lyrical playing and crisply rounded fretboard touch evident in virtually any style of music he plays: Gypsy jazz, fusion, blues, post-bop, funk, swing, and more. While the jazz populace considered him a fusion player based on 1972's Stream and 1974's September Man, Catherine proved more adventurous -- evidenced by the other artists he worked with during the decade: Kenny Drew, Rolf and Joachim Kuhn, Jean-Luc Ponty, Peter Herbolzheimer, and Larry Coryell (with whom he recorded and toured as an acoustic duo. The following year he recorded with Charles Mingus, who dubbed him "Young Django" (resulting in an album of the same title with Stephane Grappelli, Coryell, and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen in 1979). In the early '80s, Catherine toured with Benny Goodman and played in trios with Chet Baker and Didier Lockwood. After the acclaimed Chet's Choice in 1985, Catherine returned as a leader with the funky, charting Transparence in 1987. During the '90s, the guitarist recorded three albums with trumpeter Tom Harrell, two fine duos with Pedersen (Spanish Nights and Art of the Duo), and a pair of widely acclaimed trio dates with Serge Delaite and George Mraz (Emotionally and Teenagers). Two very electric post-bop fusion outings, Guitar Groove and Blue Prince, appeared under Catherine's name for Dreyfuss Jazz to kick off his 21st century as international hits. 2009's Culture Griot with Baba Sissoko, 2011's Plays Cole Porter, and the live La Belle Vie all registered internationally.

Born in London in 1942 to an English mother and Belgian father, Catherine moved to Brussels with his family at a young age. As a teenager, he became interested in the guitar, influenced at the time by French singer/songwriter and poet George Brassens. By age 14 he was taking lessons, and learning the basic elements of jazz improvisation when he discovered Django Reinhardt. He quickly absorbed the jazz legend's distinctive style, and eventually picked up other influences, including Belgian guitarist René Thomas. He also immersed himself in albums by such luminaries as Art Blakey, Clifford Brown, Max Roach, and others.

Catherine began playing gigs while in his teens, working in a trio with American Hammond B-3 specialist Lou Bennett and drummer Oliver Jackson. There were also stints with Belgian saxophonist Jack Sels and Philadelphia-born/Brussels-based drummer Edgar Bateman. In 1970, violinist Jean-Luc Ponty asked him to join his band and, inspired by contemporaries like John McLaughlin and Larry Coryell, Catherine stayed with Ponty for a year, dedicating himself to the progressive fusion sound. Also during this period, he attended formal music classes at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

After returning to Belgium, Catherine found himself in high demand and developed a bevy of connections, including playing with Klaus Weiss, Les McCann, Karin Krog, Dexter Gordon, and others. As a solo artist, he made his debut with 1971's Stream, a funky, inventive mix of acoustic and electric jazz. He followed up in 1975 with Guitars and September Man, both also highly inventive, fusion-influenced albums. Sessions with Herb Geller, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, and Charles Mingus followed, as did a duo tour with guitarist Coryell. Also during the '70s, he paired with close associate saxophonist Charlie Mariano for a handful of sessions, and rounded out the decade with his own Nairam, which also featured Mariano, along with trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg and others.

During the '80s, Catherine's profile continued to rise as he released several more well-regarded efforts, including Babel, End of August, and Trio with guitarist Christian Escoude and violinist Didier Lockwood. There also were dates with Aldo Romano, Stéphane Grappelli, and Kenny Drew. Also in the '80s, he gained attention for his work with legendary West Coast trumpeter/vocalist Chet Baker, touring and appearing on such albums as 1983's Mr. B and 1985's Strollin'. Although his 1986 album, Transparence, layered keyboards into his atmospheric sound, his work with Baker pointed toward a more acoustic-leaning aesthetic. It was a sound he further embraced on 1990's I Remember You. Dedicated to Baker (who died in 1989), the album also featured trumpeter/flügelhornist Tom Harrell. Throughout the '90s, Catherine released a steady stream of albums for smaller jazz labels like Enja, Criss Cross, and Dreyfus, including albums like Moods, Vol. 1, Spanish Nights, and 1999's Guitar Groove.

In 2001, he returned with Blue Prince, which found him balancing his love of acoustic jazz and electric fusion. Joining him were trumpeter Bert Joris, bassist Hein van de Geyn, and drummer Hans Van Oosterhout. Joris was also on board for 2002's Summer Night. The orchestral album Meeting Colours followed three years later. The more intimate Guitars Two appeared in 2008. He then joined bassist van de Geyn, pianist Enrico Pieranunzi, and drummer Joe La Barbera for the 2010 live album Concert in Capbreton. A year later, he delivered the trio date Plays Cole Porter, followed by 2013's warmly sophisticated Côté Jardin. The duo album New Folks with bassist Martin Wind followed a year later. He then joined the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie for 2015's The String Project: Live in Brussels. In 2017 Catherine was a co-billed soloist with Finnish saxophone legend Eero Koivistoinen on Jazz Liisa 13, and the following year cut La Belle Vie with longtime friend and collaborator Aldo Romano on drums and organist Emmanuel Bex. In 2019, Catherine issued the trio date Manoir de Mes Rêves with upright bassist Sven Faller and acoustic guitarist Paulo Morello. The program of French standards was compiled from pop, jazz and chanson. In 2020, KTI Japan in association with Warner International remastered and reissued Stream.

Niels Pedersen & Philip Catherine • Art Of The Duo

Review by Rick Anderson
This summit meeting between Niels-Henning Ørsted Pederson, one of the most widely recorded and universally respected bassists in jazz history, and guitarist Philip Catherine, an almost equally revered guitarist and perhaps the foremost keeper of Django Reinhardt's gypsy-jazz flame in his generation, should have been a much more exciting one that it turns out to be. Recorded live in a jazz club in Lausanne, Switzerland, it is unfortunately a fairly tame affair, its highlights hidden behind poor production. (The recording level is so low that you have to crank your stereo up to a painful level just to hear in detail what is going on.) Interestingly, some of the best moments on this album are the bass solos, among them Pederson's dancing choruses on "Stella by Starlight" and on his own knotty composition "The Puzzle". Catherine's playing sounds conservative, almost tentative, and the proceedings rarely catch fire. Notable exceptions include the duo's interplay on "The Puzzle" and on a blazing rendition of the Jerome Kern standard "All the Things You Are". It's by no means a waste of time, but Art of the Duo is also far from the best introduction to the work of either of these fine musicians.

All the Things You Are".

Philip Catherine • Concert In Capbreton

Philip Catherine has been on the forefront of the European jazz scene since the sixties and worked with great artists like Chet Baker, Stéphane Grappelli, Charlie Mingus and Dexter Gordon. His unique approach and sound, his dedication to music have been important and influential, and today he is a source of inspiration for many artists of the new generation.

Born in London in 1942 and being from a musical family, he developed a musical ear from an early age. When he was 18 he already toured Europe with Lou Bennett. With his recordings “September Man” and “Guitars” in the mid-seventies, jazz amateurs all over the world discovered not only a brilliant guitarist but also a talented composer: themes like “Homecomings” and “Nairam” have become famous.

Philip Catherine has played in the most prestigious concert halls, from the Berlin Philharmonic to the Carnegie Hall, from the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam to the Olympia and Salle Pleyel in Paris and the Palais des Beaux-Arts of Brussels.

About the solo album “Guitars Two” (2008, Dreyfus Jazz) the magazine Guitarist Acoustic wrote : “simply one of the most beautiful cd’s of this year”. The CD “Concert in CapBreton” (2010, Dreyfus Jazz) is a magic live recording with an all star line up featuring Enrico Pieranunzi, Hein Van de Geyn and Joe LaBarbera. “Philip Catherine plays Cole Porter” - in Quartet with Karel Boehlee (p), Philippe Aerts (b) and Martijn Vink (dr) - was released in 2011 on Challenge Records and received among others the CHOC in JazzMag.

Philip Catherine celebrated his 70th birthday in October 2012 with a memorable anniversary concert at the Brussels Palais des Beaux-Arts and a new CD. “Coté Jardin” (11/2012, Challenge Records) was recorded with his new quartet : great italian pianist Nicola Andrioli, young drum phenomenon Antoine Pierre and longstanding companion Philippe Aerts on bass, and enchants both jazz fans and classical music lovers.

In january 2014 the album ‘New Folks’ was released on ACT Music, a duo recording with German bassplayer Martin Wind, followed by several tours throughout Europe and the US.

The première of Philip Catherine's 'String project', a selection of his compositions in arrangements with string orchestra, took place on 13.01.2015 at Flagey/Brussels. Philip's quintet, together with the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie conducted by Frank Braley, gave a sublime concert for a full house. The performance was filmed by national TV VRT-Canvas, and a selection was released on CD in September 2015 on ACT Music : “The String Project – Live in Brussels”. R.Garszczyński wrote in JazzPress : “This is one of the best jazz recordings with strings of all times.”

In May 2016 Philip received the ECHO JAZZ AWARD 2016 'Best international guitarist' in Hamburg/Germany, with this album.

Philip Catherine will celebrate his 75th birthday in the autumn 2017. For this occasion WARNER Music France prepares a special 5-CD Box : the long awaited re-release of his early vinyl records 'September Man' and 'Guitars', the albums 'Babel' and 'End of August', completed with an unedited solo recording by Radio Bremen of 1979 & 1982.

Philip Catherine continues relentlessly and open-minded his search for renewal and perfection. The formulas with which he performs give him the rhythmic support and freedom to unfold his wide palette of musical styles, from that irresistible groovy rock sound to the broad lyrical phrases of which he is a master.

Downbeat : « He is one of the most accomplished and rewarding guitarists now playing jazz. »

Francis Marmande-‘Le Monde’ : « Philip Catherine is one of the last ‘romantics’ in jazz. Philip Catherine doesn’t play music: he is music. A lyricism that hits the unconscience. Music, music, sometimes with an air of simplicity that makes you believe nothing is easier than observe a photon in it’s course. Great art. »

Philip Catherine, Christian Escoude, Didier Lockwood • Trio

Review by Scott Yanow
This is an interesting set featuring both Philip Catherine and the lesser-known Christian Escoude on guitars, plus violinist Didier Lockwood -- not a typical trio record. The music often swings a la Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, but the repertoire (three songs apiece by each of the musicians) is more advanced, actually falling into the post-bop genre. Lockwood in particular excels in this setting.

Chet Baker • Late Night Jazz

A unique and poignant jazz album, Chet Baker’s "Late Night Jazz." captures a rare and intimate moment from the final years of the legendary jazz trumpeter Chet Baker.

Recorded on February 17-18, 1988, at Sysmo Studio in Montmartre, Paris, "Late Night Jazz" showcases Baker’s extraordinary talent in a close setting. The session features esteemed musicians including pianist Egil Kapstad, bassist Terje Venaas, and Belgian guitarists Philip Catherine and Nicola Stilo.

This project, initiated by Norwegian poet Jan Erik Vold, envisioned a collaboration that blends jazz with poetic expression. While there were concerns that this might be Baker’s last recording session, he went on to record additional albums shortly after. Nevertheless, "Late Night Jazz" stands as a remarkable document of Baker's artistry during a challenging period in his life.

Philip Catherine • Guitars

Richard Galliano Quartet • New Musette

Biography
Richard Galliano has succeeded, through his musical emphasis on melody, rhythm, and harmony, in imposing his instrument in musical contexts that previously ignored it-jazz festivals (Marciac, Vienne, Montréal, etc.) and classical concert halls (Academia Santa-Cecilia in Rome, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, Milan' s la Scala, etc.).

He was born in Cannes on December 12, 1950. He studied piano and accordion with his father, Lucien Galliano, before pursuing his musical studies at the Nice Conservatory, presided at that time by organist Pierre Cochereau. He studied counterpoint, harmony, and trombone, graduating with a 1er Prix d' Excellence in 1969. In parallel with this musical apprenticeship he took part in international accordion competitions. Playing J.S. Bach, Tchaikovsky, Ravel and Gershwin, he won first prize in the accordion "World Cup" two years in a row (1966, Valence, Spain and 1967, Calais, France) as well as the President's Prize in 1968 (under President Charles de Gaulle).

In 1973 he left the south of France for Paris. For several years he collaborated with Claude Nougaro, Barbara, Serge Reggiani, Charles Aznavour, Juliette Gréco, Georges Moustaki and Zizi Jeanmaire. His duo performance with singer Allain Leprest for the album Voce A Mano won him the Grand Prix du Disque from the Académie Charles Cros. In the realm of French chanson we should also mention his musical encounters with the singer Catherine Ringer (of the group Rita Mitsouko) at the Cité de la Musique (Paris) and at the Antibes Jazz Festival in Juan-Les-Pins.

In 1983 Astor Piazzolla invited Richard Galliano to be the bandoneon soloist at the Comédie Française in his original music to accompany William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream", directed by Jorge Lavelli. It was the beginning of a long friendship between the two men that lasted until Piazzolla's death in 1992.

Between 1980 and 2003 Richard Galliano shared the stage with great musicians in concerts all over the world (Paris, New York, Moscow, London, Buenos Aires, Montréal, San Francisco, Istanbul, etc.). He played with : Chet BAKER, Ron CARTER, Joe ZAWINUL, Al FOSTER, Pierre MICHELOT, Birèli LAGRENE, Jean François Jenny CLARK, Eddy LOUISS, Philip CATHERINE, Aldo ROMANO, Daniel HUMAIR, André CECCARELLI, Charlie HADEN, Michel PORTAL, Didier LOCKWOOD , Maurice VANDER , Jimmy GOURLEY , Steve POTTS , StefanoBOLLANI , Hervé SELLIN , Hamilton DE HOLANDA , Lolo BELLONZI, Enrico RAVA, Toots THIELEMANS, Jean Charles CAPON, George MRAZ, Mark FELDMAN, Larry GRENADIER, Scott COLLEY, Clarence PENN, Gil GOLDSTEIN , Jan GARBAREK, Paquito DI RIVERA, Michel PETRUCCIANI, Gilberto GIL, SIVUCA, Martial SOLAL, Philippe AERTS, Antonello SALIS, Richard BONA, Manu KATCHÉ, Paolo FRESU, Jan LUNDGREN, Daniel GOYONE and many others.

During this period he also composed numerous original works, many of which were acclaimed by both the press and the public.

In 1991 Richard Galliano created the "New Musette" style and recorded it with Philip Catherine (guitar), Pierre Michelot (bass) and Aldo Romano (drums) for the record label Label Bleu.

IIn 1993 the Académie du Jazz awarded him the Django Reinhardt prize, naming him best jazz musician of the year. The same year, he recorded the album Viaggio, his first as part of an exclusive contract with the Dreyfus Jazz label, with Biréli Lagrène (guitar), Pierre Michelot (bass) and Charles Belonzi (drums). Nominated for the annual Victoires de la Musique, the album received the Django d' Or prize for best album of the year..

In 1995 Richard Galliano recorded Laurita, with Joey Baron (drums), Palle Danielsson (bass) and three other prestigious guests: Toots Thielemans (harmonica), Didier Lockwood (violin) and Michel Portal (clarinet).

In 1996 his third album for Dreyfus Jazz, New York Tango, recorded in New York with Al Foster (drums) George Mraz (bass) and Biréli Lagrène (guitar), won an award at the Victoires de la Musique.

The following album, Blow Up, recorded in 1997 in a duo with Michel Portal, met with phenomenal success, selling more than 100,000 copies and winning numerous awards: Victoire de la Musique, the Boris Vian Prize (Académie du Jazz) and Best International Album (Musica Jazz).

In 1998 Richard Galliano recorded French Touch with Jean-François Jenny-Clark (bass), Daniel Humair (drums), Michel Portal (saxophone), André Ceccarelli (drums), Rémi Vignolo (bass) and Jean-Marie Ecay (guitar). The album, nominated for the Victoires de la Musique and awarded Best International Album by Musica Jazz, was released after five years of touring by the Galliano/Jenny-Clark/Humair trio. Unfortunately its release was saddened by the death of Richard Galliano' s close friend Jean-François Jenny-Clark..

In 1999 Richard Galliano recorded his sixth album for Dreyfus Jazz, Passatori, in Florence, Italy, with string players from the Tuscan chamber orchestra L' Orchestra della Toscana and pianist Stefano Bollani, playing a program of original compositions and works by Astor Piazzolla. Passatori was nominated for the Victoires de la Musique.

Dreyfus Jazz released a three-disc boxed set of unreleased concerts the same year, comprising a solo album recorded at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Orvieto on December 31, 1998, a duo with Michel Portal recorded in Hamburg on October 29, 1998, and a trio with Daniel Humair and Jean-François Jenny-Clark recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 10, 1996.

The year 2001 saw the release of two albums - Gallianissimo and Face To Face. The first is a greatest hits compilation of his years with Dreyfus Jazz and the second a new studio recording in a duo with Eddy Louiss. The latter won the 2001 Django d' Or prize and was nominated for the Victoires de la Musique.

Ten years after the death of Astor Piazzolla, Dreyfus Jazz released in 2003 a concert in his honor recorded live direct-to-two-track at the Willisau Festival on August 29, 2002 as a septet with Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabédian (violin solo), Lyonel Schmit (second violin), Jean-Marc Apap (viola) Raphaël Pidoux (cello), Stéphane Logerot (bass), and Hervé Sellin (piano).

The septet formation, which gave its name to the album (Piazzolla Forever), was unique in playing at both jazz festivals and classical venues (Nice Jazz Festival, Amsterdam Concerttown, Montreux Jazz Festival, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, etc.).

All that without forgetting the re-issues of Blue Rondo à la Turk (1980) and Blues sur Seine as a duo with the cellist Jean-Charles Capon, Salsamba (1983) with Chet Baker (trumpet) and Brazilian musicians, Spleen (1985) with a Latin quintet in which Richard Galliano played melody on the accordina (keyed wind instrument) and Panamanhattan (1990) as a duo with the American bassist Ron Carter.

Richard Galliano has never worried about being the world' s best accordionist but rather has always been concerned with giving his audience the very best of himself, of "playing the music of his world", and of delving into his diverse musical roots - Italian, Mediterranean, jazz, French chanson, and classical music.

He has inspired the entire new generation of international accordionists. Today many young musicians to play his music and "copy" his style (the are more than 50 versions of his "Valse à Margaux"). In addition some of his former students have embarked on interesting and rich musical careers, including Peer Glovingen (with Gidon Kremer) and Daniel Mille.

In August 2002, for the yearly Down Beat Poll, Richard Galliano is arriving first of "new generation" in the category "miscellaneous instruments".

In May 2003, Richard Galliano is appearing with Michel Portal at the Scala of Milano (recording of the Live album "Concerts").

In the years 2004/05, after the recording of the New York Trio album, Richard is touring extensively with the American rhythm section : either Larry Grenadier on bass and Clarence Penn on drums, or Clarence with Scott Colley on bass. The second trio tour culminates at the Theatre des Champs Elysées in Paris in May 2005. In June of the same year, Richard is back to Paris to record a DVD of the Piazzolla Forever Septet at the Theatre des Bouffes du Nord, the exact place where the project had been launched three years before : after 250 concerts given worldwide, the septet is ending their collaboration in the venue of their start, though this high profile event will still remain available in the future for special concerts.

In March 2006, R.Galliano invited with his New York rhythm section the very special guest Gary Burton, world famous top vibraphone master, at the initiative of the Cité de la Musique in Paris, and this project tours extensively and will be touring again in the autumn 2007. A recording took place in New York in August 2006, and will see the light in September 2007 for the Italian label Camjazz.

But it is definitely the Tangaria project, a special quartet with violin (the incredible Alexis Cardenas from Venezuela), bass (Philip Catherine's mate Philippe Aerts), and another fine player from Venezuela, percussionist Rafael Mejias, with the Brazilian special guest on mandolin, Hamilton de Holanda, that will be the highlight of the year 2007, with an extensive tour in the summer 2007, adding the fine drumming of Clarence Penn. Recorded with some Brazilian special guests in Sao Paulo in September 2006, the album will be out in February 2007 for Milan Records, a label which is very familiar to the work of Astor Piazzolla.

Tocando a J.S.

Tocó con : Chet BAKER, Ron CARTER, Joe ZAWINUL, Al FOSTER, Pierre MICHELOT, Birèli LAGRENE, Jean François Jenny CLARK, Eddy LOUISS, Philip CATHERINE, Aldo ROMANO, Daniel HUMAIR, André CECCARELLI, Charlie HADEN, Michel PORTAL, Didier LOCKWOOD , Maurice VANDER , Jimmy GOURLEY , Steve POTTS , StefanoBOLLANI , Hervé SELLIN , Hamilton DE HOLANDA , Lolo BELLONZI, Enrico RAVA, Toots THIELEMANS, Jean Charles CAPON, George MRAZ, Mark FELDMAN, Larry GRENADIER, Scott COLLEY, Clarence PENN, Gil GOLDSTEIN , Jan GARBAREK, Paquito DI RIVERA, Michel PETRUCCIANI, Gilberto GIL, SIVUCA, Martial SOLAL, Philippe AERTS, Antonello SALIS, Richard BONA, Manu KATCHÉ, Paolo FRESU, Jan LUNDGREN, Daniel GOYONE y muchos otros.

Larry Coryell-Philip Catherine • Twin House

Review by Robert Taylor
The first of two fine guitar duet recordings with Phillip Catherine. Of the two, Catherine's sound is more rooted in the tradition of Django Reinhardt and tends to be more introspective. Coryell is his usual incorrigible self; however, Catherine's presence seemed to inspire more experimentation and intelligent playing on Coryell's part. As expected, this session will appeal primarily to guitarists -- and for good reason, as both players exploit their chops -- but it should be noted that the compositions here are quite memorable. Whether soloing over one riff ("Mortgage on Your Soul"), playing the blues ("Twin House"), or showing off ("Airpower"), this is an excellent collaboration and one of Coryell's most ambitious performances.

Philip Catherine • Plays Cole Porter

Philip Catherine Trio • I Remember You
